Tungsten Boat

A tungsten boat is a common tool used in thin film deposition processes, particularly in physical vapor deposition (PVD) techniques such as thermal evaporation. It’s essentially a boat-shaped container made of tungsten, a metal known for its high melting point and resistance to heat and corrosion.

Here’s how it works:

1. Loading: The material to be evaporated is placed inside the tungsten boat. This material can be anything from metals to ceramics, depending on the desired thin film composition.

2. Heating: The tungsten boat is heated, usually via electrical resistance or by passing a high current through it. This causes the material inside to heat up and eventually reach its vaporization point.

3. Evaporation: Once the material reaches its vaporization point, it turns into a vapor which rises from the boat. The vapor then condenses onto a substrate placed above the boat, forming a thin film.

Tungsten boats are preferred for evaporation processes because tungsten has a very high melting point (over 3400°C), allowing it to withstand the high temperatures required for vaporizing many materials. Additionally, tungsten is relatively inert, meaning it won’t react with most materials being evaporated, ensuring purity in the thin film deposition process.
